BURNT HUES: ARTEFACTS

As a ceramic artist based in Berkhamsted, England, Sarah’s practice is deeply rooted in the exploration and transformation of discarded materials. She seeks to challenge the conventional boundaries of ceramic artistry by integrating wasted materials, colour and texture that would otherwise be relegated to landfill. Her work is an inquiry into the potential of these materials, incorporated across four distinct firing methods: raku, raku saggar, electric saggar, and electric.

The collection, Burnt Hues: Artefacts, serves as both an exhibit and an experiment, showcasing 300 individual pieces that encapsulate her findings. Each artefact stands as a testament to the alchemy of clay and waste, with the hues smoked into the vitrified surface through a dynamic interplay of fire and material. The reverse of each piece is marked with a unique cuneiform code, an ancient symbolic representation of the technical journey it has undergone, serving as her maker's mark and technical signature.

Sarah’s artistic journey is one of continuous curiosity and collaboration. She is driven by a commitment to repurposing the overlooked, transforming it into meaningful, tangible art. She actively seeks partnerships with those who share a passion for sustainability and innovation, aiming to expand this project through collaborative installations and the creation of unique vessels. Through this work, she endeavours not only to craft objects of beauty but also to spark a dialogue about the value of materials and the potential for art to redefine waste.
