Clay Venetian blind slats are mounted on a Shou Sugi Ban support, intricately threaded with a waxed cotton binding. The cedar offcuts, sourced from FB Marketplace, have been charred to achieve the distinctive finish associated with the ancient Shou Sugi Ban technique, which effectively preserves the wood.
My aim was to showcase the saggar-fired clay slats within a familiar interior context: window blinds. Saggar firing, another ancient technique, repurposes wasted materials from the construction industry as combustibles to leave an imprint on the vitrified clay.
The title ‘Polishing The Absurd’ aims to spark reflection on our contemporary relationship with interior fast fashion, juxtaposing it with the often-overlooked value of ancient artistry and craftsmanship. This prompts a critical reflection: what do we truly value more?
